It began in 998 AD when a group of Jews wandering the Silk Road came to Kaifeng, then capital of China. Emperor Zhenzong welcomed them and encouraged them to keep their own customs and rites. They settled down and from then on developed their business and cultural contacts all over China.

Later, in the 19th century, Sephardic Jewish merchants appeared in Shanghai followed in the early 1900s by large numbers of Russian Jews. And, during World War II, Shanghai became "The Port of Last Resort" for thousands of Jews escaping Nazi tyranny.
